Ferretti's Market selected for 2010 SCORE Build A Better Mousetrap Award
The Brewster Chamber of Commerce has selected Ferritti's Market to be honored with a Cape Cod SCORE "Build A Better Mousetrap Award" for 2010. Co-owners Gina Ferretti and Mark Ferretti will be guests during the awards ceremony on May 20th.
The Build A Better Mousetrap program recognizes small businesses from Cape Cod and the islands that have "survived the first critical five years" in business and are contributing to the health of the local economy. Each of the eighteen chambers of commerce from the region is invited to annually select one business from their community to be honored. The awards ceremony is in June.
Ferritti's Market opened in Brewster nine years ago when the grocery business that the family had managed in Harwichport was closed and then sold. The owners are Gina Ferretti, who joined the business last year after her father retired, and Mark Ferretti. Located at the intersection of Underpass Road and Long Pond Drive (Rte. 137) they faced the challenge of being off the beaten path in a town that does not have a business center. But the 'locals' quickly discovered the variety offered by this personable, family-owned grocery, as well as the convenience of being able to buy small, fresh portions daily rather than stocking up on bulk products.
Ferritti's has 35 year-round employees, and adds 35 more in the summer, working a variety of full and part time schedules. They are open daily from 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM and until 7:00 PM in the summer. They are particularly known for their butcher department where one can order a special holiday roast or get custom cuts. Their deli has a take-out section with choices for just one sandwich to a complete picnic, and they also prepare platters for catered events.

Town Meeting approves Chamber's funding article; Temporary Signs Bylaw derailed by legal snafu
There were 8 articles left out of 31 on the Annual Town Meeting when at last, article 9 - Local Business Organization Funding - came before the voters. This Selectmen's Article transfers $24,500.00 to the Brewster Chamber of Commerce to be used to help offset costs for staffing and managing the Information Center and for promoting the town as a visitor destination. The funds received represent approximately 27% of the chamber's annual operating budget, and is 4% of the rooms tax revenue generated by the lodging businesses in Brewster.
The Temporary Signs Bylaw amendment requested by the Chamber and sponsored by the Selectmen was indefinitely postponed. This 11th-hour decision came about after lengthy evaluation and discussion with Town Counsel. Changes made in the language of the bylaw when it was sent to legal notices for a public hearing AFTER it was already posted on the Warrant rendered the bylaw illegal. The Warrant was posted on April 1st but behind-the-scenes changes were made after that date.
Unfortunately, what this means for the business community is another summer violating the regulation against the use of temporary A-frame signs in Brewster. We are hopeful that we can arrange some sort of amnesty with Town officials and will keep you informed.
In the meantime, we are mounting the campaign to bring this to the voters in the Fall. Your participation in upcoming workshops and public hearings will send the message that this is the right step to take for the businesses of Brewster.
